Consistent with the goal of the NL Artisanal and Craft Beer Club (NLACBC), Mike, Tom and Matt wish to bring more good beer to more great people. Please explore the Beer page for list of breweries and beer and Events page for details on all events taking place on September 22 and 23 at the St. John’s Curling Club (135 Mayor Avenue). We expect to have over 100 beer, most new to the province. Tokens will be $1.00 each (minimum of 5). Full opened bottles of many beer will be exchanged for tokens at the bar in the lounge for a slightly reduced price. Beer tastings of 50 ml will be exchanged for 1-3 tokens depending upon the retail cost of the beer.
Mike Buhler (“Beerthief”) is a passionate fan of beer. Mike was the first Certified Cicerone east of Montreal in Canada and continued beer themed focus through his biweekly column in the Telegram and regular tasting events. Mike changed the face of draft beer in NL by launching a draft beer service company in NL in 2015. Mike is now pursuing other interests in the world of beer and looking for new ways to make NL a better place to drink beer. The name has changed to the NL Artisanal and Craft Beer Club and Mike has returned to helping Tom manage the club activities.
Tom Beckett has been associated with the beverage alcohol industry in Newfoundland and Labrador since 1979 when he was appointed as the area representation of the Opimian Society, the national wine society of Canada. Tom taught courses in wine appreciation and understanding single malt whisky with the Lifelong Learning Division of Memorial University. Tom is also an accredited Tequila taster. Since 1992, Tom has provided wine education and wine tastings for institutions and the general public through Beckett on Wine. Tom provides the administrative management of the beer club while Mike selects the beer.
Matthew Power came to love beer a bit later, first really exploring beer as a cocktail ingredient. Thanks to the work of the beer club, there was plenty of good beer to experiment with; before long, Matt was working with the club, and he’s been with them ever since. He is a regular fixture at club tastings, and often leads small-group tastings and bar-tends for private events.
